David Barry—born in 1943 and often credited as Meurig Jones—is a Welsh actor and author best known for his unforgettable portrayal of Frankie Abbott, the timid "mummy's boy" in the classic 1970s sitcom Please, Sir! and its spin-off The Fenn Street Gang. With a career spanning more than six decades, he has appeared in film, theatre, and television, working alongside icons such as Tyrone Power, Laurence Olivier, and Vivien Leigh, and later returning to the role of Frankie Abbott for a 2016 Edinburgh Fringe revival. As a writer, David has built an impressive and varied body of work. His novels include the crime thriller Each Man Kills, the children's adventure The Ice Cream Time Machine, and a series of Welsh-set noir thrillers written under his birth name, Meurig Jones. He has also penned the Micawber series, contributed scripts to Keep It in the Family, and continues to explore crime, comedy, and drama across multiple genres. A true storyteller in every medium, David Barry remains a distinctive voice in both British entertainment and contemporary fiction.
